What a difference a year makes!

One year – that’s 12 months, 52 weeks, 365 days, 8760 hours, 525,600 minutes or 31,536,000 seconds – what could you achieve in that time?

Already, we’re in November; 2018 is nearly over and many of us will be preparing for Christmas looking back wondering where the year has gone and what we have been doing. At what point did those New Year’s resolutions fly out of the window? February, maybe March? Maybe you’re a bit deflated and thinking you’ll try again next year, but why wait until the new year to make a change, to learn something new or to start working toward a new goal? It might be that you want to learn a new language or a new skill, you might want to travel around the world, get a new job or start family – all things which can be achieved in less than a year. So, ask yourself, where do you want to be this time next year?

Whatever the answer to that maybe, a good starting point is with your body. Keeping fit and healthy is a major boost to both your physical and mental performance and if you‘re reading this blog then you probably already have some interest in fitness.

When it comes to your body and mind, exercise is key. It can help to resolve medical problems and physically turn your life around. Those endorphins are amazing for the mind too, so if it’s a book you want to write in the next year, taking care of your body will help you achieve this by giving you the energy and reducing your stress levels!

This is where Absolutely Fitness comes in. What can be done in a year obviously depends on what your current level of fitness is and what your ultimate goals are. Normally you don’t need more than 45 minutes to complete an effective workout so just think about how many of those sessions you can fit into one year! Remember, to see the most improvements, consistency is crucial!

Some benefits of exercising are obvious from the outset, such as a boost in mood and energy, while others can take weeks or months to see, such as losing weight or improving your strength and stamina. To gain strength and stamina can take about four weeks of regular training, while it may take up to 6 weeks before you start seeing real visible results.

Reaching mini-goals along the way keeps you motivated, dedicated and disciplined, which are all skills that you can transfer into real life at home or at work!

The first thing you need to do before you start your training is to suss out the reasons for wanting to achieve your goals. While very simplistically you may want to lose weight or start feeling a bit fitter, converting these goals into measurable ones will help to track your progress and keep you motivated. For instance ‘in three months’ time I would like to run 5km without stopping’.
